More about studying in Amman »
Amman is the capital and largest city in Jordan and is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. Amman is the economic and cultural center of the country, and continues to grow, thrive, and welcome new inhabitants every year. In the past fifty years, Amman has also been a safe-haven for many refugees of Palestine and Iraq, and therefore has a very diverse population. Students interested in studying at an Arabic school in Amman will enjoy the contrast between the ancient and the new – and will find plenty to keep themselves busy with, whether they enjoy high class shopping or tasting the delicious local fare like schwarma and mansaf. Amman is a very safe city and it is almost always safe to walk in the streets, whether day or night; it is also a great “base” city for taking trips to other nearby attractions such as the Dead Sea and Mount Nebo in the small city of Madaba. Students who want to take Arabic courses in Amman will be able to practice their new language skills in the streets of Amman, or perhaps by heading to the Balad – the central downtown are with food, and a shopping area of street carts and antiques where visitors can bargain with native speakers for great deals on antiques and trinkets. For an even more traditional Jordanian experience, visitors can head to the Souq, the old-downtown, and enjoy the smells of the spice market and practice their language skills with the locals.
Ahlan World offers Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) courses across 8 levels, from absolute beginner to advanced. MSA is the standard Arabic that forms the basis of all Arabic dialects across the Arab world.
Jordanian Colloquial Arabic (JCA) courses offer students an immersive study of the
Jordanian dialect, which is used by locals for everyday interactions and conversation.
The Jordanian dialect is very similar to other Levantine dialects, which include those
spoken in Lebanon and Syria, and is also closer to MSA than many other Arabic dialects,
especially those used in northern Africa.
